Profile

Göran Therborn was born on 23 September 1941 in Kalmar, Sweden. He is a Swedish sociologist and Professor Emeritus at the University of Cambridge.

His work has moved across political sociology, comparative historical sociology, global inequality, welfare states, families, cities, class analysis and radical social theory. His publications have appeared in at least twenty-four languages.

Studies and Career

Therborn studied political science, sociology and economics at Lund University, where he completed his PhD in sociology in 1974. He was docent in sociology at Lund University from 1974 to 1981.

He later served as Professor of Political Science at the Catholic University of Nijmegen, Professor of Sociology at Gothenburg University, co-Director of the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences in Uppsala, and Professor of Sociology at the University of Cambridge. After retirement from Cambridge he continued as Director of Research until 2017. He was also Affiliated Professor of Sociology at Linnaeus University from 2010 to 2020.
